List of Certificate Courses Offered at Kenyatta University (KU)

Always dreamt of joining a university of your choice but did not manage to score the grade needed to pursue Degree courses?

Then do not worry.

I have created a handpicked list of all the Certificate courses offered at Kenyatta University.

Being a premier institution in the country, KU offers some of the best certificate courses recognized by major employers inside and outside the country.

These certificate courses basically last for six months to one year of duration. Although there are some that last for 1.5 to 2 years.

You can pursue these courses with a C plain, C- or even D+. It depends on the course though. Without wasting much time, let’s dive in.

The following are the certificate courses offered at Kenyatta University:

  • Certificate in Sports Administration and Management
  • Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation
  • Certificate in Project Management
  • Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education
  • Certificate in intensive English
  • Certificate in one of the following languages; Japanese, German or French
  • Certificate in Film and Theatre Arts
  • Certificate in music
  • Certificate in Chinese Language and Culture
  • Certificate in African Languages; Kiswahili, Arabic, Gikuyu, Dholuo

1. Certificate in Sports Administration and Management

If you have been thinking of doing Sports Administration, albeit at a Certificate level, then this course is for you. According to the KU website, a student must have attained C- at the KCSE level to be eligible to pursue this course.

The course runs for a period of one academic year, in which a student takes 12 units (which is equivalent to 35 contact hours).

(Offered in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, and Embu campuses).

During the first semester, a student does six units:

  • HRS 001; Basic Issues in Sports Management
  • HRS 002; Sports Organizations
  • HRS 003; Sports Personnel Management
  • HRS 004; Sports Officiating
  • HRS 005; Sports Programming
  • HRS 006; Sports Marketing

The units for the second semester are as follows:

  • HRS 007; Legal Liability in Sport
  • HRS 008; Sports Facility Design and Construction
  • HRS 009; Basic Concepts of Crowd Management
  • HRS 010; Public Relations in Sport
  • HRS 011; Tournament Formats
  • HRS 012; Practicum (8 weeks)

Program Fees: East Africans Kes. 34,400/= Non-East Africans. Kes. 43,000/= Statutory Fees Kes. 32,900/=

2. Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation

It is one of the Certificate courses one can pursue even with a C-. It is supposed to take a duration of one academic year.

This program is designed to produce competent and qualified project monitors and evaluators in various organizations.

(Offered in Main, City, Mombasa, Nakuru, Embu Campuses).

At Kenyatta University, a student undertakes the following 12 units (6 in each semester):

  • BAC 010: Basic Financial Accounting
  • BBA 010: Essentials of Management
  • BMS 010: Project Communication
  • BMS 011: Essentials of Business Information Systems
  • BMS 012: Introduction to Business Statistics
  • BMS 013: Fundamentals of Project Management

3. Certificate in Project Management

This is a bit similar to the Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation explained above but in terms of subject content, they are different.

Both are offered in the School of Business at Kenyatta University and both contain 12 units done in one academic year.

The following are the units done by a student undertaking this course:

  • BMS 011: Essentials of Business Information Systems

(This program is offered on the following campuses: Main, City, Mombasa, Nakuru, Embu).

4. Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education

A grade of C- at the KCSE level is the minimum requirement for this certificate course. A student who scored a D+ but with at least one year of handling ECDE pupils is also eligible to apply.

This program is offered for a period of two semesters for full-time residential students or three sessions for Institution Based Learners (August, December, and April).

A student must pass all of the following units before being given the certificate:

  • ECE 001: General Psychology and Child Development
  • ECE 002: Indoor and Outdoor Play Activities
  • ECE 003: Language Development in ECE
  • ECE 004: Nutrition, Health Education and Care
  • ECE 005: Social Studies and CRE
  • ECE 006: Creative Arts and Craft
  • ECE 007: Introduction to Instruction Methods and Strategies in Early Childhood Education
  • ECE 008: Science Activities in Early Childhood
  • ECE 009: Basic Principles of Administration and Supervision of ECE Programs
  • ECE 010: Early Identification and Intervention of Children with Special Needs
  • ECE 011: Teaching Practice (Two Units)

5. Certificate in intensive English

English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. That is why Kenyatta University saw it prudent to offer it as one of the best certificate courses.

This program runs from January to July with a one-month break in April. During this period of six months, the students take the following units:

Session 1

  • AEN 001:  Listening and Pronunciation Skills
  • AEN 002:  Listening and Speaking Skills
  • AEN 003:  Introduction to Reading in English
  • AEN 004:  Reading in English
  • AEN 005:  Grammar and Vocabulary I
  • AEN 007:  Writing Skills I

Session II

  • AEN 006:  Grammar and Vocabulary II
  • AEN 008:  Writing Skills II
  • AEN 009:  Speaking Skills
  • AEN 010:  Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary
  • AEN 011:  Advanced Writing
  • AEN 012:  Advanced Reading Skills

The good news is that: one can do this course with a minimum grade of D plain at the KCSE level.

6. Certificate in one of the following languages; Japanese, German or French

JAPANESE

As the name suggests, this course deals with learning the Japanese language and phonetics.

The following are the units done in the Certificate in Japanese:

Semester 1

  • AFJ 00I: Introduction to Japanese Languages and People
  • AFJ 002: Japanese Language 1
  • AFJ 003: Japanese Grammar 1
  • AFJ 004: Function Japanese 1
  • AFJ 005: Reading and Writing
  • AFJ 006: Listening Skills 1

Semester 2

  • AFJ 007: Japanese Grammar II
  • AFJ 008: Japanese Language II
  • AFJ 009: Function Japanese II
  • AFJ 010: Reading and Writing II
  • AFJ 011: Japanese Phonetics and Phonology
  • AFJ 012: Listening Skills II

GERMAN

Students in the Certificate Program in German will be required to successfully complete the
12 units offered to qualify for the award of the Certificate in German. These units are as follows:

First Semester

  • AFG 001: Introduction to German
  • AFG 002: German Grammar I
  • AFG 003: Speaking I
  • AFG 004: Listening I
  • AFG 005: Reading Skills I
  • AFG 006: Writing Skills I

Second Semester:

  • AFG 007: German Grammar II

  • AFG 009: Listening II
  • AFG 010: Reading Skills II
  • AFG 011: Writing Skills II
  • AFG 012: Cultural Background of German-Speaking Countries

FRENCH

A student undertaking Certificate in French will do the following units in the first semester:

  • AFF 001: Introduction to French-Speaking World: French Language and culture
  • AFF 002: Conversational French I
  • AFF 003: French Grammar I
  • AFF 004: Language Practice: Structural Exercises I
  • AFF 005: Reading and Listening I
  • AFF 006: French Verb I

The units for the second semester are as follows:

  • AFF 007: Conversational French II
  • AFF 008: French Grammar II
  • AFF 009: Language Practice: Structure Exercises II
  • AFF 010: Reading and Listening II
  • AFF 011: Writing in French
  • AFF 012: French Verb II

7. Certificate in Film and Theatre Arts

A minimum of C- is required to become eligible for this course. A student can either opt for two semesters with 6 units each; or three sessions with 4 units each.

Students must take and pass the following units:

  • CFT 002: Introduction to Acting for Stage
  • CFT 006: Introduction to Radio Broadcasting Techniques
  • CFT 009: Introduction to Costume and Make-Up
  • CFT 010: Introduction to Dance Skills
  • CFT 012: The Fundamentals of Children’s Theatre
  • CFT 014: Introduction to Video Camera Operations
  • CFT 015: Introduction to Art and Technique of Film Making
  • CFT 016: Introduction to Basic Animation
  • CFT 019: Introduction to Theatre and Film Marketing and Management
  • CFT 020: Introduction to Audio-video Editing

Program Fees: East Africans Kes. 65,000 Non-East Africans Kes. 81,657 Statutory Fees Kes. 21,000.

8. Certificate in Music (Offered in Main Campus)

The admin is beginning to get tired; can you sing for me?

Just kidding!

This certificate course is offered by the School of Creative & Performing Arts, Film and Media Studies.

The eligibility criteria are a Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with proven participation in Music. (Maybe you should sing for me after all!)

Program fees: East Africans Kes. 40,000 Statutory Fees Kes. 21,300.

9. Certificate in Chinese Language and Culture

This is offered through the Confucius Institute and it is offered as a short course in Main and City Kenyatta University campuses. A minimum of grade C- is required.
