Being a premier institution in the country, KU offers some of the best certificate courses recognized by major employers inside and outside the country.
These certificate courses basically last for six months to one year of duration. Although there are some that last for 1.5 to 2 years.
You can pursue these courses with a C plain, C- or even D+. It depends on the course though. Without wasting much time, let’s dive in.

1. Certificate in Sports Administration and Management
If you have been thinking of doing Sports Administration, albeit at a Certificate level, then this course is for you. According to the KU website, a student must have attained C- at the KCSE level to be eligible to pursue this course.
The course runs for a period of one academic year, in which a student takes 12 units (which is equivalent to 35 contact hours).
(Offered in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Garissa, Kisumu, and Embu campuses).
During the first semester, a student does six units:
- HRS 001; Basic Issues in Sports Management
- HRS 002; Sports Organizations
- HRS 003; Sports Personnel Management
- HRS 004; Sports Officiating
- HRS 005; Sports Programming
- HRS 006; Sports Marketing
The units for the second semester are as follows:
- HRS 007; Legal Liability in Sport
- HRS 008; Sports Facility Design and Construction

2. Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation
It is one of the Certificate courses one can pursue even with a C-. It is supposed to take a duration of one academic year.
This program is designed to produce competent and qualified project monitors and evaluators in various organizations.
(Offered in Main, City, Mombasa, Nakuru, Embu Campuses).
At Kenyatta University, a student undertakes the following 12 units (6 in each semester):

This is a bit similar to the Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation explained above but in terms of subject content, they are different.
Both are offered in the School of Business at Kenyatta University and both contain 12 units done in one academic year.

4. Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education
A grade of C- at the KCSE level is the minimum requirement for this certificate course. A student who scored a D+ but with at least one year of handling ECDE pupils is also eligible to apply.
This program is offered for a period of two semesters for full-time residential students or three sessions for Institution Based Learners (August, December, and April).
A student must pass all of the following units before being given the certificate:
- ECE 001: General Psychology and Child Development
- ECE 002: Indoor and Outdoor Play Activities
- ECE 003: Language Development in ECE
- ECE 004: Nutrition, Health Education and Care
- ECE 005: Social Studies and CRE

5. Certificate in intensive English
English is one of the most spoken languages in the world. That is why Kenyatta University saw it prudent to offer it as one of the best certificate courses.
This program runs from January to July with a one-month break in April. During this period of six months, the students take the following units:

8. Certificate in Music (Offered in Main Campus)

This certificate course is offered by the School of Creative & Performing Arts, Film and Media Studies.
The eligibility criteria are a Mean grade of C- (Minus) at KCSE or equivalent with proven participation in Music. (Maybe you should sing for me after all!)

9. Certificate in Chinese Language and Culture
This is offered through the Confucius Institute and it is offered as a short course in Main and City Kenyatta University campuses. A minimum of grade C- is required.
