How Did they become the Worst Universities in Kenya?
The ten institutions named above had the bottom ten rankings according to Webometrics. If you didn’t know before, Webometrics is an online university ranking system that ranks all universities in the world.
The list was generated after careful observation of the latest Webometrics ranking for Kenyan Universities.
Universities are ranked based on several factors including:
- Academic reputation: is based on the research excellence of universities.
- Employer reputation: how graduates of the said university perform in the job market.
- Lecturers to Student Ratio: though difficult to measure, lecturer to student ratio determines the quality of education in a said Institution. We all know that in a well-staffed university, students have meaningful access to their tutors hence learning better.
- Citations per faculty: it is the total number of citations received by papers produced by the Institution.
- International Student Ratio: An institution with a high number of international students demonstrates that the university possesses a strong international brand.
These and other factors are all taken into account when determining the best (and the worst) universities.

1. Harvard Institute of Development Studies Thika
The fancy name should not mislead you.
Harvard Institute of Development Studies Thika is the worst university in Kenya. It is ranked position 125 in Kenya and position 31,212 worldwide.
Although offering a wide range of marketable diploma and certificate courses, it has managed to top our list of worst universities in Kenya.
It is located at the heart of Thika town, on the 5thfloor of Victory Plaza opposite Mathai Supermarket.
2. Multimedia Academy Kenya (Nairobi Film School)
Also known as the Nairobi Film School, Multimedia Academy is the second-worst university in Kenya.
It has a national rank of 124, with a global rank of 30,788.
MAK is situated just outside Nairobi City, off Ngong Road. To give credits where it is due, Multimedia Academy offers good certificate and diploma courses in video and graphic design.
It shouldn’t be confused with the Multimedia University of Kenya.

3. Eagle Air Aviation College Ongata Rongai
With a national rank of 123 and a global rank of 30,105; Eagle Air Aviation College closes our top three list.
It is located on the third floor of Osigili Plaza, Ongata Rongai.
Courses offered by this institution include a Diploma in Flight Operations, Diploma in Travel and Tourism, and Certificate in Public Relations.
4. Mahanaim Educational Institute College
Mahanaim College is located in Nairobi, and it offers professional undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It was established in 2007 as an International Youth Fellowship (IYF) academy.
It is ranked number 122 in Kenya and number 30,015 globally, making it one of the poorly performing universities in Kenya.

5. Bell Institute of Technology Nairobi
According to Webometrics, Bell Institute of Technology ranks position 121 nationally and position 29,840 globally.
The institution offers courses such as Mobile Phone Repair, Graphic Design, and Computer Programming.
It is situated at Twiga Towers, 6th Floor – opposite Meridian Court Hotel.
6. Keiway Mining and Technology College
Keiway Mining and Technology College is another ‘worst’ institution in the country.
Located in Kilifi, Keiway is a mid-level college offering courses in the mining, gas, and oil sectors.
It has a national rank of 120 and ranks position 29555 globally.
7. Century Park College Machakos
Century Park College found in Machakos town is the seventh-worst university in Kenya.
It is ranked position 119 in Kenya and position 29,105 globally.
It offers a wide range of courses, such as Early Childhood Education, hospitality, and business courses.
8. Starnet College Nairobi
Starnet College offers Accountancy (CPA), computer application packages, and digital marketing courses.
Starnet College has made it to our list of worst institutions because it has a global rank of 29,076 as of 2022. Nationally, it ranks at position 118, just before Skynet Business College.
9. Skynet Business College Nairobi
Skynet Business college is position 9 when it comes to the worst universities in Kenya. It ranks position 117 nationally, and position 29,004 globally.
Its Nairobi Campus is located on Jamia Towers’ 1stFloor.
It offers a variety of courses such as Software engineering, secretarial studies, ICT, and hairdressing.

10. Career Training Centre Nairobi
Career Training Centre ranks at position 116 in Kenya and position 28,729 in the world.
Though established in 1991, it still hasn’t managed to gain much reputation to avoid being on this list.
The school offers courses such as Hospitality, Aviation, ICT, and career development.
